Clinical Expertise
The Oncology Nurses Society of Kenya (ONS-K) is dedicated to enhancing access to quality cancer care by leveraging the advanced clinical skills of our members to serve patients and communities across Kenya. We conduct community-based cancer screening and awareness campaigns, deliver specialized oncology and palliative nursing care, and provide compassionate home-based services to individuals battling cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. Our goal is to ensure that every patient receives holistic, person-centered care—whether in hospitals, communities, or their homes.
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Kenya, often complicated by late diagnosis and limited access to care—especially in remote or underserved areas. In response, the Oncology Nurses Society of Kenya (ONS-K) has positioned itself at the forefront of community health engagement, offering lifesaving services and advocacy to reduce the cancer burden and improve quality of life for patients and families.
1. Cancer Screening and Awareness Campaigns
Early detection saves lives. ONS-K conducts regular screening camps and awareness forums in collaboration with county governments, hospitals, corporate sponsors, faith-based organizations, and community groups. These initiatives provide free or low-cost cancer screenings for breast, cervical, prostate, and other common cancers, while also educating the public on cancer risk factors, prevention strategies, warning signs, and when to seek medical help.
Through targeted outreach, we aim to empower communities with accurate information, dispel myths about cancer, reduce stigma, and promote health-seeking behavior—especially among vulnerable populations.
2. Clinical Nursing Care for Oncology and Palliative Patients
ONS-K members are professionally trained to deliver specialized nursing care across the entire cancer care continuum—from diagnosis through treatment, survivorship, or end-of-life care. Our nurses provide:
Pain and symptom management
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy support
Nutritional counseling
Psychosocial and emotional support
Coordination of multidisciplinary care
We ensure that patients receive holistic, dignified care that meets not just their physical needs, but also their emotional, spiritual, and social well-being.
3. Home-Based Care for Cancer and Terminal Illnesses
For patients unable to access healthcare facilities—or those who prefer to spend their final days in a familiar environment—ONS-K offers home-based nursing care services. Our trained nurses travel to patients’ homes to deliver:
Symptom management and palliative care
Wound care and mobility support
Medication administration
Caregiver training and family counseling
Grief and bereavement support
This service not only improves the quality of life for terminally ill patients, but also eases the burden on families by offering professional, compassionate care where it’s needed most.
4. Building Local Capacity
As part of our mission, ONS-K also trains community health volunteers, caregivers, and healthcare providers to strengthen the continuity and sustainability of cancer care at the grassroots level. By sharing our skills and supporting local health systems, we ensure that care does not end when outreach campaigns do.
The Oncology Nurses Society of Kenya believes that every person has the right to cancer care that is timely, affordable, and compassionate. Through our mobile teams, clinical partners, and dedicated members, we are bringing that care closer to where people live—reaching the underserved, supporting families, and transforming cancer care in Kenya, one patient at a time.
